Skin boosters have seen a surge in popularity, and are now offered by an increasing number of aesthetic clinics. If you’ve been hearing about skin boosters and wondering if they’re worth it, this guide is for you.

Skin boosters are injectable treatments made primarily from hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the skin and plays a key role in maintaining hydration and elasticity. In these treatments, the hyaluronic acid is lightly cross-linked or non-cross-linked, allowing it to spread evenly through the skin to improve skin quality rather than add volume or change facial shape.

Some formulations also contain added amino acids, vitamins, or peptides to support collagen production and overall skin health. Because the ingredients are biodegradable and gradually broken down by the body, skin boosters offer a subtle, regenerative approach to rejuvenation.

Unlike traditional dermal fillers that focus on contouring or volume, skin boosters work beneath the surface to smooth fine lines, enhance elasticity, and improve hydration, giving the skin a healthy, natural glow.

They’re versatile and can be used on the face, neck, hands, and décolletage to refresh and revitalise the skin with soft, long-lasting results.

How Do Skin Boosters Work?

Skin boosters work by delivering small amounts of hyaluronic acid (and sometimes additional active ingredients) directly into the dermis, the layer of skin responsible for firmness, elasticity, and hydration.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the skin that can bind up to 1,000 times its weight in water. When injected as a skin booster, lightly cross-linked or non-cross-linked HA integrates into the extracellular matrix, where it attracts and retains moisture, improving skin hydration from within and creating a more supportive environment for skin cells.

This increase in dermal hydration helps:

  • Plump fine lines by restoring water content
  • Improve skin smoothness and texture
  • Enhance elasticity by supporting collagen and elastin fibres

In addition to its hydrating effect, hyaluronic acid can stimulate fibroblast activity, encouraging the skin to produce new collagen and elastin over time. Some formulations also include amino acids, vitamins, peptides, or antioxidants, which further support cellular repair, collagen synthesis, and overall skin health.

Unlike dermal fillers, which use more heavily cross-linked HA to create structure and volume, skin boosters use a softer, more spreadable form. This allows the product to disperse evenly through the skin, improving skin quality, luminosity, and resilience without altering facial shape.

How Do Skin Boosters Feel?

Most people describe skin booster injections as mildly uncomfortable rather than painful. The treatment involves tiny micro-injections into the skin, usually spaced a few millimetres apart, which can feel like small pinches or pricks. The good news is that topical numbing cream is applied before treatment.

A typical session usually lasts 15 minutes, depending on the treatment area and the number of injections needed. After the procedure, you might notice slight redness, swelling, or tiny bumps where the injections were made. This is normal and should settle within a day.

Types of Skin Boosters

Brand Key Components What It Does Best For / How It Differs
Restylane Skinboosters Stabilised hyaluronic acid (NASHA® technology) Improves hydration, skin texture and elasticity Suitable for overall skin quality improvement and fine lines; integrates gradually within the dermis and offers slightly more structural support than lighter boosters
Stylage HydroMax™ (Vivacy) Cross-linked hyaluronic acid + sorbitol (antioxidant) Intense hydration with antioxidant protection Ideal for dehydrated, dull skin needing moisture support; sorbitol helps reduce oxidative stress and prolong hydration
SKINVIVE by Juvéderm Micro-droplets of modified hyaluronic acid (Vycross® technology) Enhances smoothness, glow and cheek hydration Designed specifically to improve skin quality and radiance rather than contour or volume
Redensity 1 (Teosyal) Hyaluronic acid + amino acids, vitamins, antioxidants Hydration, revitalisation and dermal support Focused on “skin nutrition” due to added dermo-revitalising complex; often selected for tired or stressed skin
Profhilo Hybrid high- and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid Bio-remodelling: hydration and tissue stimulation Unique for stimulating collagen and elastin production alongside hydration, with a noticeable firming effect

Some popular skin booster brands include Restylane Skinboosters, Hydromax, Skinvive, Redensity 1, and Profhilo. At BU Aesthetics, we use all brands, and individuals are assessed for the most suitable.

Polynucleotides, on the other hand, are not traditional skin boosters – they’re biostimulators / regenerative injectables. Find out more about whether polynucleotides are skin boosters

Skin Boosters vs Dermal Fillers

Skin boosters and dermal fillers are both injectable treatments but they serve different purposes.

Skin Boosters:

  • Focus on improving skin quality, hydration, and elasticity
  • Can smooth fine lines without adding volume
  • Ideal for subtle, natural-looking results and skin rejuvenation
  • Often require multiple sessions for optimal effect

Dermal Fillers:

  • Mostly used to restore lost volume, facial harmonisation, and soften deeper wrinkles
  • Can significantly change the appearance of specific areas such as cheeks, lips, and jawline
  • Effects are usually more immediate and noticeable compared to skin boosters
  • May last longer than skin boosters, depending on the type of filler used

If you want to improve your skin’s hydration, texture, and subtle radiance, skin boosters are usually the better option. However, if your goal is to restore volume or reshape facial features, you may prefer dermal fillers.

What Can Skin Boosters Treat?

Skin boosters can be used to improve multiple skin concerns, such as:

  • Fine lines & wrinkles –  Hydrates and softens lines
  • Dehydrated skin –  Restores moisture from within
  • Dull skin –  Improves radiance and glow
  • Uneven texture – Smooths rough or patchy areas

You should avoid skin boosters if you have skin infections, active acne, certain allergies, or are pregnant/ breastfeeding. You must also tell your practitioner if you have any bleeding disorders or other specific health issues.

Ideal Candidates by Age

Skin boosters can benefit adults of all ages, but the reason for having them (and the results you can expect!) can differ depending on your stage of life.

  • In your 20s – Best for prevention, hydration and maintaining glow
  • In your 30s – Best for early fine lines, mild volume loss, and tired-looking skin
  • In your 40s – Best for more prominent fine lines and uneven texture
  • 50 plus – Best for hydrating mature skin and improving texture

Are There Any Side Effects to Skin Boosters?

Although there are no permanent side effects to skin boosters, you may experience some minor side effects with skin booster treatment:

  • Bruising – You may notice small bruises around the injection site (especially if you bruise easily)
  • Swelling – Some people experience mild swelling or puffiness around the injection point (this is normal and only lasts a few hours to days!)
  • Tenderness – The treated area might feel sensitive for a short time
  • Redness – The skin may look slightly flushed immediately after treatment

Some rare/ less common side effects include lumps, infection, and allergic reaction.

Allergic reactions are very rare, especially with hyaluronic acid–based boosters, as HA is naturally found in the body. You should get urgent medical support if you show signs of an allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, hives, dizziness, or feeling faint.

Note– In clinical studies of hyaluronic acid–based skin boosters, most reported side effects are mild and temporary, such as redness, bruising, swelling, or slight discomfort. Importantly, no serious adverse events have been reported in larger published studies of HA skin boosters.

How Long Do Skin Booster Results Last?

Results typically last between 4 and 6 months, although some people experience benefits for up to 9 months, depending on the product used, number of sessions, and lifestyle factors.

Most people notice their skin looking brighter, smoother, and more hydrated within 1 or 2 days after treatment, with further improvement as the product integrates into the skin.

Longevity can depend on your skin type and lifestyle, the product type and concentration, and the treatment area.

What to Expect Over Time

  • Immediately – Your skin may look slightly plumper due to hydration from the injection process itself.
  • 1-2 weeks –  This is when you’ll see the real benefits such as improved glow, softer fine lines, and a smoother texture.
  • 2-3 months –  Results often peak around 3 months. Your skin may feel more elastic and bouncy.
  • 4-6 months –  Effects may start to taper off
