Radiesse is an injectable product categorised as an injectable implant rather than a soft tissue filler because it does not provide an immediate filling action like a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler. It contains calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres – a mineral found in our bones. The product appears white in the syringe and the CaHA is suspended within a water- and sugar-based gel carrier for ease of injection. Once carefully placed, it forms a scaffold-like structure within the dermis of the skin to support the internal growth of fibroblasts or new skin cells by stimulating the body to produce more collagen fibres for tissue remodelling naturally.

Over time, a firm, dense collagen framework will be built thanks to the action of the CaHA to give a long-lasting result, improving skin quality and providing structural support to loose skin with a lifting action.

Radiesse is ideal for facial rejuvenation procedures to restore the structure of the face, improve soft tissue augmentation, correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles or folds including nasolabial folds and marionette lines, and lift specific areas for cheek augmentation or volume loss, and for deep dermal or sub-dermal (on the bone) injection, ideal for use along the jawline and chin to combat facial ageing.

Radiesse is approved for use in the backs of the hands to improve skin quality and correct volume loss on the dorsum or backs of the hands, known to be an area of complaint concerning ‘showing your age’, especially in women, where crepey, loose skin that lacks plumpness can appear more aged because it reveals the underlying tendons and veins which would be hidden by increased fat in youth. It can also be used diluted or hyper-diluted with saline to improve moderate to severe wrinkles on the neck and décolletage.

Radiesse cannot be used within the lips. We offer a range of alternative cosmetic injectable dermal filler and lip filler products for shaping and enhancing the size of lips.

The amount of Radiesse required will vary for different areas of the face, neck, hands, or décolletage, alongside the need to address different severities of skin quality and lifting. The incremental improvements also vary by treatment area and will determine the number of syringes recommended and how many individual treatment sessions. This will be explained by our Independent Nurse Prescriber Caroline, who is the owner of BU Aesthetics™ in West Kirby.

Following a thorough 30-minute consultation with Independent Nurse Prescriber Caroline, we can determine if you are a suitable candidate for treatment using Radiesse. Caroline will take a full medical history to determine if you have any underlying medical conditions, or known allergies, or are taking any medication that could make you unsuitable or contraindicated for treatment. A known allergy to lidocaine, calcium hydroxylapatite, or any of the ingredients within the product, a history of anaphylaxis, or bleeding disorders is likely to be contraindicated.

Radiesse is suitable for men and women of all skin types (colours), so if you are generally in good health, you should be able to have treatment.

If you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding or are under 18 years old, you cannot have treatment. Similarly, if you have damaged or broken skin in the area to be treated, or an active bacterial, fungal, or viral infection, this will need to be resolved before treatment.

It is important that you discuss what you hope to achieve from Radiesse treatment so we can evaluate if it is the right treatment for your concerns. All aspects of treatment, including any risks, will be fully explained during your consultation, allowing you to book your treatment appointment or have some time to go away and think about it. Few treatments are performed on the same day as your consultation appointment.

Radiesse contains a local anaesthetic (lidocaine) within the syringe that is delivered alongside the calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres to avoid discomfort during injection.

Calcium hydroxylapatite makes up most of the structure of human bones and is a naturally occurring mineral. In its injectable form, it is biodegradable, causes minimal inflammation, and has a good safety history.

Radiesse is regarded as an advanced soft tissue injectable product which requires appropriate training for correct injection – both in terms of depth and the area being treated to avoid overfilling, overcorrection or inappropriate placement – making it vital that you only seek treatment from an aesthetic clinician like Caroline who has undergone authorised training in the use of Radiesse.

Common side effects after treatment include redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, or itching at the injection sites, with the potential for mild bruising (especially in the hands). These are usually temporary and resolved within a few days to a week.

Injection into the hand may cause longer lasting, but again, temporary side effects, making it more difficult to use your hands to perform certain activities in the first week or two after treatment. You will be advised to remove rings and any other hand jewellery before treatment due to the risk of post-treatment swelling causing circulation problems to the fingers. Rings can be worn again once any swelling has subsided. Any prolonged swelling should be reported to us. There is a rare, reported risk of lump (nodule) formation in the back of the hands which can persist for up to a year.

As an Independent Nurse Prescriber, Caroline has significant experience in complications management and can diagnose and prescribe medications if an adverse side effect occurs. Full aftercare advice will be given.

Improvement from treatment with Radiesse is not immediate, making it different to hyaluronic acid gel dermal fillers which immediately and visibly plump the soft tissue under the skin.

The calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres contained in Radiesse must first fully integrate into the soft tissue, forming a scaffold-like structure in the area we want to improve. The presence of the CaHA microspheres initiates a natural wound-healing response in the body to stimulate new collagen production. This enhances skin quality and increases the lifting effect around the scaffold created. The result will improve incrementally over several weeks, with noticeable improvements to skin laxity and quality, restoring structure and elevating features, reducing sagginess, and rejuvenating your appearance. A full result can be expected after 2-3 months.

Results are long-lasting because you retain a dense collagen framework within the skin. A review appointment can be scheduled after one month to assess your results and further optimise with additional treatment sessions if advised.

Results vary by patient with treatment expected to last up to 2 years, but on average 12-18 months for most people. To maintain results and optimise the treatment, we recommend repeat treatment with Radiesse every 12 months.
