With any cosmetic procedure, what you do afterwards can be just as important as the treatment itself.
Taking the right steps during recovery can help you make the most of your investment, protect your results, and most importantly, support the healing process.
In this guide, we cover everything you need to know about Lumecca aftercare, including side effects, downtime, and the do’s and don’ts after treatment.
Why Does Lumecca Aftercare Matter?
Aftercare is an important part of a Lumecca or Lumecca Peak treatment, as your skin may feel sensitive and inflamed for a short period afterwards.
Both procedures use targeted pulses of light to break down unwanted pigment and visible blood vessels, which can leave your skin temporarily delicate and reactive. For a closer look at how the treatment works, read our guide on what Lumecca is.
Knowing what to avoid and when you can return to your usual routine can help support the recovery process and protect your results.
Lumecca Side Effects
Lumecca and Lumecca Peak side effects are typically mild and temporary, usually settling within a few days.
Most patients experience little to no downtime following treatment, but it’s still helpful to know what to expect. You might experience:
- Redness and warmth: The treated area may look and feel similar to mild sunburn.
- Swelling: Mild swelling can occasionally occur around the treated areas, particularly in delicate zones such as around the eyes.
- Darkening of pigment: Freckles and sun spots may appear darker for 24 to 48 hours before gradually flaking away.
- Dryness or flaking: You may notice some dryness or light peeling as the skin naturally renews itself.
- Bruising: Very mild bruising can occasionally occur where broken capillaries or veins have been targeted.
- Sun sensitivity: As Lumecca targets melanin, your skin can be more sensitive to sunlight following treatment, making SPF application particularly important.
These effects should gradually settle as your skin recovers. However, if you experience significant pain, spreading redness, pus or a fever, seek medical advice, as these symptoms could indicate an infection.
Lumecca Healing Process and Recovery Time
The recovery period after Lumecca and Lumecca Peak is typically short, with most side effects settling within two weeks.
| Time Period | Side Effects |
| Days 1-3 | Redness and heat peak on day 1, then fade. Pigmentation may also darken, similar to “coffee grounds.” |
| Days 4-7 | Skin may feel rough and dry while the dark spots naturally flake and slough off. |
| Week 2 onwards | Most flaking will be finished, and a visibly clearer, brighter, more even skin tone should emerge. |
Note: Everyone responds to treatment differently, so your healing process may not follow this exact timeline.
How Long Until I See Results After Lumecca?
You may start to notice changes a few days after your Lumecca or Lumecca Peak treatment, with results becoming more prominent over 1-2 weeks.
However, for optimal effect, it’s advised to complete 1-2 Lumecca Peak treatments or 3-6 Lumecca sessions. Our team can talk you through the recommended approach and help you understand what to expect.
Lumecca Aftercare: The Do’s and Don’ts
A little extra care in the days following your Lumecca or Lumecca Peak treatment can help keep your skin calm and comfortable. Here’s what we recommend:
- Protect your skin from the sun: Avoid direct sun exposure and apply SPF for 28 days following treatment to help minimise the risk of pigmentation changes.
- Leave the skin alone: Resist scratching, picking or peeling the treated area, even if it starts to flake.
- Take a break from strenuous exercise: Sweat can irritate the treated area, so avoid intense exercise while your skin is recovering.
- Keep the area cool: Avoid hot baths, saunas and other heat treatments for the first 24 hours. A cool compress can also be used to soothe warmth and swelling.
- Skip alcohol and smoking: We recommend avoiding both for the first 24 hours, as they may contribute to increased redness and swelling.
- Keep your skincare simple: Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and a soothing, barrier-supporting moisturiser. Hyaluronic acid can help provide lightweight hydration.
- Pause active ingredients: Give your skin a break from retinoids, AHAs, BHAs and physical or chemical exfoliants for 5 to 7 days, or as advised by your practitioner.
These are general aftercare guidelines, and your practitioner will provide personalised advice based on your skin and treatment.
At BU Aesthetics, we’ll talk you through what to expect before and after Lumecca Peak, including the steps to follow at home.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many hours after IPL can I shower?
You should be able to take a shower straight after an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or Lumecca treatment, but we recommend using cool or lukewarm water for the first 24 to 48 hours to remain gentle on the skin.
Can you wear makeup after Lumecca?
After a Lumecca or Lumecca Peak treatment, we recommend waiting 24 hours before applying makeup to reduce the risk of irritation.
Can I exercise after Lumecca?
Heat and sweat could worsen skin irritation and redness, so we advise avoiding strenuous exercise for at least 24 to 48 hours after a Lumecca or Lumecca Peak treatment.
How long after Lumecca can I have other treatments?
You can resume basic makeup or gentle skincare products after 24 hours, but you should wait a week before using active ingredients like retinoids, AHAs, and BHAs.
For any stronger clinical treatments like peels or further laser procedures, we recommend waiting at least 2 to 4 weeks to allow your skin to heal.
What skincare should I avoid after Lumecca?
After Lumecca or Lumecca Peak, you should avoid using active, harsh, or exfoliating products for at least 5 to 7 days. For example, retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C, physical scrubs, and overly fragrant products could worsen irritation and sensitivity on healing skin.
How long do Lumecca results last?
Lumecca and Lumecca Peak results usually last between 6 to 12 months, occasionally 18 months depending on your skin type and sun exposure. It’s recommended to schedule a touch-up treatment once or twice a year to maintain balanced, radiant-looking skin.
What Should I Do Before a Lumecca Treatment?
We recommend avoiding direct sun exposure and tanning before treatment, as Lumecca and Lumecca Peak target melanin in the skin. It’s also important to avoid self-tanning products beforehand, as these can affect how the light is absorbed by the skin.
It’s also advised to pause retinol products, AHAs, BHAs and other exfoliating ingredients for 48 hours before your treatment, as these may make the skin more sensitive.
