Duration
10 minutes.
Anaesthesia
None required.
Contraindications
You need urgent medical help, such as if the lesion is bleeding heavily, looks infected, or is accompanied by feeling unwell, a fever or swollen glands. Your GP has already referred you urgently for the same lesion, such as through a two-week-wait referral. You’ve had melanoma or another skin cancer, or are currently under a dermatology or skin cancer team. You’re at higher risk of skin cancer and need ongoing monitoring, such as if you’re immunosuppressed, have had an organ transplant, or have a strong family history of melanoma. The lesion is in a genital or intimate area. The lesion is on or under a nail, inside the mouth, on the lips, or on or very close to the eyelid. You have a rash or widespread skin condition rather than a single mole or lesion. The lesion is open, weeping or ulcerated. If you're pregnant, you can use the service, but please tell us. Moles can change during pregnancy, and the dermatologist will take this into account. This service is not a diagnosis or a full-body skin check. Your report covers only the lesions we image.

What is Mole Mapping?
Mole mapping is a non-invasive skin assessment that uses high-resolution photography and dermoscopy to capture detailed images of moles and other skin lesions.
These photos provide a record of how your moles look at a particular point in time, allowing you to track changes and identify areas that may need further investigation.
Rather than relying on memory or trying to monitor your skin lesions yourself, it provides a detailed reference point for you and the healthcare professionals reviewing your skin.
How Does Mole Mapping Work?
Our mole mapping service uses the Map My Mole app, a teledermatology service focused on skin health and the assessment of concerning areas.
During your appointment, a dermascope attached to a smartphone camera is used to capture high-quality images of selected moles and skin lesions.
These images are then securely submitted for review by a UK-based consultant dermatologist, who returns a digital report to the app within 24 to 48 hours.
What to Expect from Your Mole Mapping Appointment
From before your appointment to the results provided, here’s what to expect from your mole mapping assessment.
Before
Appointments at BU Aesthetics™ typically begin with a comprehensive consultation, where you’ll talk through your concerns and medical history. If mole mapping is for you, you’ll then have a quick, non-invasive 10-minute session.
Where possible, the areas being assessed should be easily accessible. The assessment can be carried out on areas such as the face, neck, chest, back, arms and legs, but not on areas that cannot be clearly imaged, such as inside the mouth or on the genitals.
You should also avoid applying creams, lotions, or make-up to the areas being photographed beforehand, as this could interfere with image capture.
During
At the start of your appointment, a thin layer of alcohol gel will be applied to help create a clear image.
A dermascope attached to a smartphone camera will then be used to capture detailed images of the selected moles or lesions. You’ll also complete a patient questionnaire covering relevant information about your skin, including any changes you’ve noticed or relevant family history.
The process is quick and non-invasive, with no anaesthetic or downtime required.
After
Your images and questionnaire are securely uploaded for review by a UK-based consultant dermatologist.
A report is typically available through the Map My Mole app within 24 to 48 hours of submission. We recommend reading through your report carefully and following any advice provided.
If further investigation or treatment is recommended, your report will explain the next steps. This may include a further assessment by an appropriate healthcare professional or, where clinically appropriate, consideration of lesion removal.
Please Note:
You may need to rebook if:
- The skin around the lesion is sunburnt, freshly fake-tanned, or covered with make-up or cream. Please arrive with clean, product-free skin.
- You’ve had laser, IPL or other skin treatment on the area recently.
- The lesion is in a tattoo or under thick hair, which can stop us taking clear images.
- You have more than 3 new or changing moles. A full in-person skin check may suit you better, and we’ll advise you when you book.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who should get mole mapping?
Mole mapping can be particularly useful if you have a higher risk of developing skin cancer, a large number of moles, or atypical-looking moles.
Other factors that may be considered include fair skin, freckles, or a history of severe sunburn.
Can you get mole mapping when pregnant?
Mole mapping uses digital photography and non-invasive dermoscopy rather than radiation or injectable treatments.
However, if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s important to discuss your individual circumstances with your healthcare professional before booking.
What happens if further treatment is needed?
Your report will typically be available within 24 to 48 hours of submitting your images and questionnaire.
If the reviewing dermatologist recommends further assessment, Map My Mole will outline the appropriate next steps.
Depending on the findings, this may include referral to a suitable healthcare professional or lesion removal service.
Will a dermatologist check my moles?
Yes. Your images are reviewed by a UK-based consultant dermatologist, who assesses the captured moles or lesions and provides a digital report with recommendations for next steps where appropriate.
How often should you have mole mapping?
How often you should have your moles assessed depends on your individual skin cancer risk and the advice of your healthcare professional.
Some people may choose to have regular annual monitoring, particularly if they have a high mole count or other risk factors.
If you notice a new or changing mole, don’t wait for your next routine appointment. Seek advice from a healthcare professional.

This is the most professional place I have visited with staff who are extremely knowledgeable, passionate and skilled. I am made to feel welcomed and at ease on each visit. I have opted for the monthly plan and have had 3 Morpheus Burst treatments and am so very impressed with the results. Mel is amazing and both her and Caroline are beautiful souls. I cannot recommend highly enough. Thank youPosted on Google![]()

Caroline came highly recommended to me by a friend so I initially booked in for Botox. At the follow up appt she suggested some filler. I’d already been thinking about it but was apprehensive, I do not want to look or feel overly ‘done’. Caroline showed me some before and afters (which are amazing) so I took the plunge and booked! Just got home, the husband is the test-not a word or look, just carrying on as normal. During the procedure Caroline kept stopping and checking, asking me to smile, sit forward etc. Each step was full explained. So professional. I’m already delighted with the results. The clinic is beautiful too. Cannot recommend enough.Posted on Google![]()
